Chinese numeration is a system of numbers and symbols (hanzi) used in China to represent numbers.
It is a numeration which is similar to a base ten positional system, where the principles of position and addition are used.
Chinese numerals use specific characters for numbers 0 to 9, as well as powers of ten (like 10, 100, 1000, etc.). Numbers are constructed by combining these characters.
Example: 21 is written 二十一 which is the characters for 2, 10 and 1.
Although these two characters 二 (èr) and 两 (liǎng) represent the same number 2, their usage varies depending on linguistic and grammatical contexts.
— 二 (èr) is used for simple numbers, series, or formal contexts such as mathematics, dates, telephone numbers, etc.
— 两 (liǎng) is used for quantities in front of units of measurement, counted objects, or large numbers (usually starting from 200, 2000, etc.)
This distinction makes the language more fluid and avoids ambiguities when talking about quantities or large series of numbers.
Chinese numeration has an equivalent to 10 digits (0 to 9) but also symbols to represent 10, 100 or 1000:
0 | 零 |
---|---|
1 | 一 |
2 | 二 |
3 | 三 |
4 | 四 |
5 | 五 |
6 | 六 |
7 | 七 |
8 | 八 |
9 | 九 |
10 | 十 |
100 | 百 |
1000 | 千 |
10000 | 万 |
100000000 | 亿 |
The numbering is then done in groups of 4 digits (10000, 100000000, etc.) whereas in the West, it is in groups of 3 digits (thousand, million, billion).
When numbers are used to talk about money, such as in finance, the symbols can be changed.
