What is a heterogram? (Definition)

An heterogram is a word that does not contain any repeated letters (all distinct are distinct).

Example: WORD is an heterogram (it contains one W, one O, one R and one D)

Example: HETEROGRAM is not a heterogram (it contains repetition of two E but only one H or T)

Example: UNCOPYRIGHTABLES is a heterogram (the longest heterogram in English)

Not to be confused with HETEROGRAPHE which is the name given to a literary magazine or HETEROGAMY which is a botanical or sociological term describing a union of two very different entities.

What is the difference between an heterogram and an isogram?

A heterogram is a word that contains no repeated letter ABC.

An isogram is a word that contains no repeated letter more often than others ABC or AABBCC or ABCABCABC.

All heterograms are isograms, however, only isograms that have no repeated letters are heterograms.

What are the longest heterogram words in English?

The english dictionary has heterogramic words up to 16 letters: UNCOPYRIGHTABLES, else with 15 letters: HYDROPNEUMATICS, HYPEROSCULATING, or in 14 letters TROUBLEMAKINGS, UNDISCOVERABLY etc.
