Warning Do not confuse Rosicrucian symbols with other more popular ciphers like Pig-Pen.
The Rosicrucian cipher is a monoalphabetic substitution cipher system. This means that it replaces each letter of the alphabet with a unique symbol.
It takes its name from its association (real or supposed) with the esoteric order of the Rosicrucians.
Writing in Rosicrucian is an alphabetic substitution of which here is the correspondence table:
A | ![]() | B | ![]() | C | ![]() | D | ![]() |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
E | ![]() | F | ![]() | G | ![]() | H | ![]() |

The message is made up of symbols which all have 2, 3 or 4 edges of a square with inside a single point/dot positioned either to the right, or in the middle, or to the left of the square.
The square is complete (4 edges) only for the letter N.
Any reference to a rose cross, a secret order, to the character of Christian Rosenkreutz (CRC) or to Freemasonry are clues.
The Freemasons' Pigpen cipher has very similar symbols (the dot on the symbols is optional and always in the center).
Several variations exist, such as the Dada Ourka code (presence of double dots) or the Knights Templar cipher (symbols with triangles rather than squares).
The exact origin of the Rosicrucian cipher is uncertain. However, it is associated with the esoteric Order of the Rosicrucians, a mystical movement that emerged in the 17th century. This cipher was reportedly used to encrypt messages within this order, to maintain the confidentiality of their communications.
